Challenge to Face the Existential Questions for the Global Church Today
De coronapandemie plaatst christenen wereldwijd voor de vraag naar de aard en de kern van hun verbondenheid. Hoe zijn we verbonden met God? Hoe zijn we verbonden met elkaar? In onze eigen lokale context, maar ook als christenen wereldwijd.
Nu belichaamde verbondenheid in al deze relaties sterk onder druk staat, is de vraag urgent wat het heil van Jezus Christus voor kerken en gelovigen betekent. En hoe ontvangen en beleven we dit heil dan? Een belangrijke vraag is ook: in hoeverre verschillen deze existentiële vragen per cultuur en context? En vervolgens: wat kunnen we juist nu van elkaar leren en ontvangen? In het Westen komen vragen op als: waar is God in deze crisis? En: wat houdt ‘heil’ eigenlijk in, als er zo’n gebrek aan verbinding is, en onze beleving van God zo plat is geworden als het beeldscherm.
Wat zegt het verschil in crisisbeleving over christelijk geloven in Noord, Oost, Zuid en West?
Wat zegt deze crisis over God, en wat zegt God door deze crisis tegen ons? Wat zegt het verschil in crisisbeleving over christelijk geloven in Noord, Oost, Zuid en West? Wat heeft het delen van heil-ervaringen in coronatijd vanuit andere delen van Gods wereld, tot gevolg voor onze geloofs- en kerkbeleving?
Tijdens een tweedaagse online conferentie reflecteren we met theologen en andere betrokken christenen uit met name Afrika, India en Nederland op deze existentiële uitdagingen van de pandemie. Vanuit elke regio zal het eigen perspectief worden uiteengezet, waarna we in kleine, intercultureel samengestelde groepen hierover in gesprek gaan. Vanuit de kern van het christelijk geloof, de persoon en het werk van Jezus Christus die als Zoon van God in onze werkelijkheid het heil belichaamde tot in zijn dood aan het kruis.
De conferentie is geheel Engelstalig. Doelgroep is primair theologen uit Nederland, India en Afrika, maar ook andere geïnteresseerden zijn van harte welkom. De organisatie is in handen van Verre Naasten en Theologische Universiteit Kampen.

Certificering
Voor Nederlandse theologen is het mogelijk om aan de conferentie deel te nemen in het kader van Permanente Educatie (omvang 2 EC; 56 uur). Om voor certificering in aanmerking te komen dient aan de volgende voorwaarden te worden voldaan:
- Deelname aan alle online sessies (8 uur)
- Bestudering van relevante literatuur (opgave volgt; 40 uur)
- Verslag (Nederlands- of Engelstalig) waarin gereflecteerd wordt op het hoofdthema van de conferentie met gebruikmaking van de bestudeerde literatuur (ca. 2500 woorden; 8 uur; deadline 30 juni 2021)
- Voldoende beoordeling van het reflectieverslag door prof. dr. Hans Schaeffer en/of Berdine van den Toren-Lekkerkerker

Corona, Connection, and the Cross – Intercultural conference
Challenge to Face the Existential Questions for the Global Church Today
The core question asked by the actual pandemic is about connection: how are Christians connected – to God and to each other – locally and globally.
Actual physical – embodied – connection is under severe pressure where Corona-measures make us keep ‘social distance’ and turning our relationships into virtual meetings. In this context the question comes up what ‘salvation’ means for churches and believers. And how do we receive and experience this salvation?
Do these existential questions differ per culture and context? And if so: what can we learn and receive from each other? In the West, questions arise such as: where is God in this crisis? What does “salvation” actually mean, if there is such a lack of connection, and our experience of God has become as flat as our computer screen. But what are the questions in other parts of Gods world?
What does the difference in crisis experience say about Christian faith in North, East, South and West?
What does the Covid pandemic tell us about God, and what does God say to us through this crisis? What does the difference in crisis experience say about Christian faith in North, East, South and West? What does the sharing of experiences of salvation in corona time from other parts of God’s world have as a consequence for our faith and church experience?
During a two-day online conference, we reflect with theologians and other committed Christians from Africa, India and the Netherlands on these existential challenges of the pandemic. Each region will set out its own perspective, after which we will discuss this in small, intercultural groups. Starting from the heart of the Christian faith: the person and the work of Jesus Christ who, as Son of God, embodied salvation in our reality until his death on the cross.
The conference is entirely in English. The target group is primarily theologians from the Netherlands, India and Africa, but other interested participants are also very welcome. The conference is organized by Verre Naasten and Theological University Kampen.
